About Us

My name is Thijs Hottenhuis, a Dutch dive instructor and web-writer currently living in Dahab, Egypt. I love diving and have always been interested in the safety aspects of diving, because being safety-conscious is the responsibility of every dive instructor.

One other reason for my interest in scuba diving safety is the fact that I did most of my dives in Dahab. Here you find the Blue Hole, a notorious dive-site where more then hundred divers have died. Every instructor working in Dahab knows that diving is not always fun.

This is something the diving industry doesn't like to show to the world. The big diving organizations all expect their instructors to tell the students that diving is a very safe and easy activity, that can be pursued by almost anybody.

Not that more then a hundred scuba divers die every year. And according to the big organizations that collect data on scuba diving safety this is a conservative estimate, because the information is not complete.

The combination of my love for diving and my interest in learning everything about diving brought me to the West Coast Commercial Diving School in South Africa, where I learned a very important insight about diving safety:"Accidents happen when divers deviate from established safe diving practices".

This insight changed my whole way of thinking about scuba diving safety. At once I realized that there is no such thing as a scuba diving "accident". It is a myth. There are good diving practices leading to safe diving and bad diving practices leading to diving "accidents". And all else is commentary.

It is my goal to explain this insight to as many divers as possible. To become "The Online Encyclopedia Of Scuba Diving Safety". To collect all the information about good diving practices to follow, and bad diving practices to avoid. The how and why of scuba diving safety. To provide information that makes diving more safe and more fun.

My diving qualifications are:
PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Instructor#623691EFR AED/Primairy/Secondary Care Instructor#623691
Commercial Diver Class 2 (WCCDS, S.Africa)
Recompression Chamber Tender(Course from Dr.Adel Taher)
IANTD Technical Diver#60467
GUE Fundamentals
DAN Oxygen Provider

My main qualification is that I am 100% independent, so I can simply tell things the way they are. I do not have to follow a political agenda. This allows me to use any source to collect the best information about scuba diving safety available, and present it here.

Currently "encyclopedia" is a very big word for my website. I will build this website block-by-block and update at least once a week, so please visit on a regular basis. If you have any comments or feedback then please contact me.

Safe diving,

Thijs Hottenhuis,
Webmaster of www.safediving.org
