Myths about Scuba Diving
Myth No. 2: Cold and discomfort are a part of diving
This is the typical macho-attitude that causes people to develop strange and unsafe idea's about diving. This kind of nonsense produces divers that dive to prove themselves, prove how tough they are, that are diving for the wrong reasons.
The right reason to go diving is to explore the underwater world in a safe and enjoyable way, with respect for the underwater environment. Enjoyable, we dive to have fun!
If you are cold when diving you simply need better exposure protection, a thicker wet-suit or a dry-suit, or a hood. The same for discomfort because equipment doesn't fit right, or is badly adjusted.
This is not OK. Once you are in the water you should not be cold and your equipment should feel comfortable.
If this is not the case, you have to change things. Maybe you need different equipment, or re-adjust your equipment. Distribute the weights in a different matter, adjust your BCD or harness.
Do whatever is necessary to feel comfortable again. Analyze what is causing the discomfort, find a solution, and make sure you are comfortable again.
Only when you are comfortable when diving you can keep your stress-levels low, and enjoy the dive. You will have more fun diving.
And when your stress-levels are low and you are not pushing yourself to the limit, you will be better able to cope with problems occurring during the dive. Warm, comfortable and relaxed divers are safer divers.
